Listening (2)

CHILDHOOD OBESITY

It is a talk of native speakers. It wasn't difficult to listen to this conversation for me, but I have listened to it twice because it was intresting. However, I found some unknown words.

Listening (1)

It is a speech of a native speaker. I have listened to this speech twice.
Vocabulary wasn't very difficult because the topic is about the words we use for naming body parts. However, the speaker sometimes talked too fast.

Conditions in Lithuanian prisons

To begin with, I would like to say that a prisoner is the same person as you. However, he has a problem. He made a mistake in his past. But everyone must have a chance to begin everything from the start. There are correctional institutions and a prison in Lithuania to give prisoners that chance.

In the area of a correctional institution there must be a shop, a barber, a library, a place for quarantine and a bathhouse. Everything what is necessary for human hygiene and learning.

Food it is served for adult prisoners 3 times per day, for juveniles 4 times per day. It must be fresh and in time.

In a prison cell there must be a bed, a shelf for books or other useful stuff and a table. Prisoners experience discomfort because they also have a toilet in the same cell. The cell must have 5 square metres or more space for one person.

Staff is the most important part in a prison. They must have enough tolerance, strong personality. They must be honest, patient and open-minded. In the prison must work enough psychologists and social workers.

Prisoners must be busy all day. For that reason they have all conditions for work which is the most suitable for them. They can draw, sew and do everything what is not dangerous or bound.

Prisoners also have a right to make calls, to send and get letters, to see relatives or friends. But they have no freedom which is the most important in humans life.

Cases on fraud

A fraud is a deception made for personal gain. Fraud is a crime and it is also a civil law violation. Defrauding people of money is presumably the most common type of fraud. Fraud can be committed through many methods including mail, phone and the Internet.

It can be:

  • academic fraud - the falsifying of research findings

  • intellectual fraud - signifies falsification

  • journalistic fraud - implies a similar notion, the falsification of journalistic findings.

E-mail fraud

Almost as soon as e-mail became used widely, it began to be used to defraud people. A naive individuals put their confidence in get-rich-quick schemes and lose their property. Fraudsters are sending e-mail messages or posting Web site information that is accessible from anywhere in the world.

How to avoid this? Don't be so trustful.

All institutions of justice , including police department are trying to fight with this. Don't be indifferent - report such crimes to the police.

Fears

Fear is a normal human emotional reaction. It is a powerful, unpleasant feeling of risk or danger, either real or imagined. Fear serves as motivation to escape to safety. An example of this may be something dangerous. During this situation the blood goes to big muscles (like legs) allowing the person to run faster.

Most people tend to avoid the things they feel afraid of. However, some people seek out of thrill of extreme sports, for example because the rush of fear can be exciting.

Most teenagers have some social fears like the fear of being embarrassed or rejected or fear of failing.

Popular people:

Barbara Streisand has a social fear. She was afraid of singing for public for twenty seven years. Streisand learnt to cope with her stage fright.

Kim Basinger is reported to suffer from panic and social fear too. It was very difficult for her to take her Oscar award in front of huge crowd. But she has had psychological therapy and it has been the solution of her problems.

To overcome fear you need:

  • be strong-minded

  • relax psychological

  • stop obsessing thoughts about the feared objects or events.

Guns control

To begin with, many damages can be caused by the firearms.

  • 10 000 of 15 000 murderes were commited with firearms in the USA

  • 49% of adults are owning a gun in the USA

  • a gun can get into criminals, juveniles, and in the "high-risk" individuals hands.

Individuals who have weaker nervous system and are carrying a gun can use it without any reason.

So, should a government regulate guns? The government claims that gun holding is for protection.

In the Bill of Rights the second amandment to the Constitution reads:

the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

However, fewer guns means fewer deaths, homicide or suicide.

Civil and public law

Firstly, comparing civil law with public law there are many disparities between it. All the ructions in the state among the citizens are concerned by civil law. However, the areas of law which involve the state as one of the parties to an action are concerned by public law. Secondly, the civil law consists of these parts: contracts, torts, trusts and probate. Contrary to the civil law, public law consists of crimes, constitutional law and international law.
Also, there are differences between civil and criminal procedures. The defendant can lose his liberty or even can be executed if his case is criminal. However, the punishments in a civil action usually are financial. For that reason, evidence is more important in a criminal action than in a civil one.
The description of the case has distinctions too. After taking a look at the description of the case, it becomes clear who the plaintiff is and who the defendant is.
On the other hand, there are some similarities between criminal and civil law. A civil action can become a criminal if the loser of the case does not agree to pay the legal costs of the prosecution or to pay money to the winner of the action.

Lifelong learning strategy

To start with, life is like a big school, so everyone should take from it as much as possible.
Our lessons begin, when we start to touch, to feel, to watch new surroundings. However, it is just a small part of the experience which we get. For that reason education is compulsory. Moreover, the society realise the importance of education and a number of students is increasing every year at universities.
There are many ways to get a knowledge and information. Firstly, everyone should remember that it is never too late to get the education. Secondly, we must be interested in everything, what is not known for us. Finally, reading books will expand your horizon.
Sometimes a knowledge can be just near you.
